Exercise 1:  Enter a Charge

To enter a charge:

  1. In the Patient window, click .

  2. Click the Charges tab.

  3. To enter a procedure code, click to display the Procedure Code Search window. Type a description in the Procedure field and click Find. Select a code and click Ok.

  4. From the Meth drop-down list, select Electronic.

  5. In the Service Dates fields, type the beginning and ending service dates.

  6. In the Tooth field, do the following:

  1. From the Mod 1 drop-down list, select the primary modifier.

  2. In the Units field, leave the number of units the procedure required at one.

  3. In the Charge Amt field, type the fee to charge for the procedure.

  4. In the Patient Due field, type the portion of the fee owed by the patient. The remainder is automatically entered in the Insurance Due field.

  5. To enter the charge, click Ok in the upper half of the Charge Entry window. The charge is displayed.

  6. If Insurance Estimating is set up for the patient's insurance plan, click Estimate at the bottom of the window. The Patient Due and Insurance Due amounts are calculated.

  7. Verify that a code is displayed in the Diagnosis field.

  8. Click Ok. Depending on the options you selected in the Practice Preferences window, one of the following windows is displayed:

Exercise 2:  Enter a Payment

To enter a payment:

  1. On the WinOMS toolbar, click .

  2. Enter search criteria and click Find.

  3. Double-click a patient record.

  4. Click .

  5. In the Pay/Adj Code field, type the code and press Tab.

  6. In the Amount field, type the payment amount.

  7. In the Transaction Date field, type the date of the transaction.

  8. In the Method field, select Check.

  9. Click Next.

  10. In the Apply column, type the appropriate amount to distribute the payment to specific charges.

  11. Enter an adjustment while entering the payment: right-click on a charge and select Adjustment from the list.

  12. In the Code field, type the adjustment code and press Tab.

  13. In the Amount field, type an adjustment amount.

  14. Click Ok. The adjustment amount is displayed in the Adjust column.

  15. Click Next.

  16. From the Next Action list, select No action.

  17. From the Billing Category drop-down list, select a billing category.

  18. Click Finish.

  19. Click Exit.
