Charting the Patient > Using the PRACTICEWORKS Voice Activation Module
If nothing happens when you speak into the microphone, try the following:
In the Voice Activation Module window, determine whether LISTENING or NOT LISTENING is flashing each time you speak into the microphone.
If the words are flashing, the voice activation module is hearing, but not understanding. See Training the Voice Activation Module.
If the words are not flashing, the voice activation module is not hearing through your microphone. Review the documentation that you received with your headset. Verify that all instructions are followed correctly.
Review the input levels on your sound card software. Sound card software differs by brand. Ensure that you check all volume and recording controls and settings.
Verify that the microphone is plugged into the proper jack on your sound card.
Attempt to record a sound in the Windows Sound Recorder. From the Windows Start menu, select All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder. Click the red dot, and start speaking.
If the green level bar is spiking up and down, the Windows software is hearing sounds from your microphone. Refer to Training the Voice Activation Module.
If the green level bar is flat, click Stop. From the Edit menu, select Audio Properties. The Audio Properties window is displayed.
Click the microphone icon that appears below the word Recording. The Recording Control window is displayed.
Verify that the level is at least 50%-75%, and retry the Windows software Sound Recorder.
