Entering Patient and Insurance Payments

The Auto-Distribute feature can be used to automate the process of distributing a patient payment and insurance payment. Auto-Distribute applies the payment from the oldest to the newest open charge and applies the correct portion of the balance.

To enter patient payments:

  1. In the Patient window, click . The Payment/Adjustment Entry window (Payment Wizard) is displayed.

  2. In the Pay/Adj Code field, click Search to search, or type the code and press Tab.

  3. In the Amount field, type a payment amount.

  4. If this is an insurance payment, verify that the correct insurance policy is selected in the Source field.

  5. From the Method section, select one of the following methods:

  1. In the Comment field, type the text to appear as a comment.

  2. To automate the process of distributing the payment of a patient, click Auto. The third window of the Payment Wizard is displayed.

  1. From the Next Action drop-down list, select the next action, if applicable.

  2. From the Billing Category drop-down list, select the appropriate billing category, if applicable.

  3. Select the appropriate checkbox to change the billing indicator, if applicable.

  4. Click Finish. The payment information is saved, and the Exit Options window is displayed.
