Generating and Printing Narratives > Creating and Printing Narrative Reports
A narrative’s categories represent the different sections in the report. You can edit the categories and the formatting and organization of the categories. You can also edit the opening and closing text for the selected category. If no findings are selected for a particular category, its opening and closing text is automatically suppressed.
To edit a category:
Select Letters > Narrative Maintenance. The Narratives window is displayed.
Select a narrative report and click Edit. The Narrative Maintenance window is displayed.
Select a category on the left and click Edit below the category list. The Edit Category window is displayed.
Edit the category name, designate the structure of the findings, and edit the category’s opening and closing text.

Use to insert variables into the opening and closing text. Image variables cannot be used in narratives. For a detailed list of the available variables, see Inserting Variables into Your Mail Merge Documents.
Click Ok.
To change the order of the categories:
Select Letters > Narrative Maintenance. The Narrative window is displayed.
Select a narrative report and click Edit. The Narrative Maintenance window is displayed.
Click and drag the category to a new location.
Click Exit.
Category findings represent the possible responses and options for a category.
Each finding contains a prompt, which is the words displayed in the data entry window, and the finding itself, which is the words displayed in the narrative report. The description can also contain variables that enable you to automatically insert patient information.
To edit a finding:
Select Letters > Narrative Maintenance. The Narrative window is displayed.
Select a narrative report and click Edit. The Narrative Maintenance window is displayed.
Select a finding and click Edit below the findings list. The Edit Finding window is displayed.
Edit the finding prompt and the corresponding text that is displayed on the narrative report.
Click Ok.
To change the order of the findings:
Select Letters > Narrative Maintenance. The Narrative window is displayed.
Select a narrative report and click Edit. The Narrative Maintenance window is displayed.
Click and drag the finding to a new location.
Click Exit.
In addition to the opening and closing text in each category, the narrative report itself can have opening and closing text, which is displayed at the beginning and at the end of each narrative report.
To edit a narrative’s opening and closing text:
Select Letters > Narrative Maintenance. The Narrative window is displayed.
Select a narrative report and click Edit. The Narrative Maintenance window is displayed.
Click Opening/Closing Text. The Edit Opening Text/Closing Text window is displayed.
Edit the text.
Click Ok.
