Promoting a Patient to a Responsible Party

When a younger patient becomes an adult or when a patient’s marital status changes, you might need to change the account information regarding the responsible party for that patient. If you want to make a patient a responsible party and remove that person from the account of another individual, you can promote the patient instead of recreating the patient record. This keeps the history records intact while separating the financial responsibilities for any subsequent visits.

To promote a patient to responsible party:

  1. From the Person Pick List, select the patient who is becoming a responsible party and click OK. The patient’s Clipboard is displayed. In the Responsible party section, the patient’s Responsible Party is displayed and selected, and the current balance is displayed.

  2. In the Responsible party section, click Self. You might be prompted for security access. A message is displayed.

  3. Click Yes.

  4. If the patient’s insurance information has changed, click Insurance. The Insurance page is displayed.

  5. In the Relationship to insured party: field, use the drop-down list to select Self.  When Self is chosen, the Insurance Plan Pick List is displayed.

  6. Select the appropriate insurance plan, or click Add to enter a new one for the patient.

  7. When you have finished updating the patient’s insurance information, click OK to return to the Clipboard’s main page.
