National Provider Identifier

This topic explains where to enter the NPI numbers in the software and how to select updated claim forms. For more information about NPI numbers, see the ADA website.

Entering Type 1 NPI Numbers

Type 1 NPI numbers identify doctors who operate independently as sole proprietors or as part of an organization. This type correlates with a doctor’s Social Security number. Type the number on each doctor’s provider record.

  1. Select List > Provider.

  2. Select a doctor and click Edit.

  3. Select the ID’s tab and type the NPI number in the Nat’l Prov ID field.

Entering Type 2 NPI Numbers

Type 2 NPI numbers identify organizations such as hospitals, clinics, group practices, or corporations. This type correlates with a practice’s Employer Identification Number (EIN). A user with appropriate security rights can enter this number on the practice record.

  1. Select File > Practice.

  2. Type the number in the National Provider Id field located in the middle of the window.

Insurance Claim Forms

To display an NPI number, you must select a 2006 claim form.

  1. Select Insurance > Select Insurance Forms.

  2. Select the applicable forms within the range of #165 - #175.

  3. On the 2006 Standard ADA forms, the provider, or Type 1, NPI number is displayed in box #54. The practice, or Type 2, NPI number is displayed in box #49. If no Type 2 NPI number exists, the software displays the Type 1 NPI number in both boxes #49 and #54 to identify the provider as both the billing and treating dentist.
