Entering the NPI Number for a Practice

There are two types of NPI numbers. Type 1 is for an individual, and Type 2 is for a group or practice.

If your office bills by practice rather than by provider, enter the doctor's Type 1 NPI for the provider, then enter the Type 2, or group NPI for the practice. The Type 1 NPI is transmitted to the clearinghouse in the treating provider field, and the Type 2 NPI is transmitted in the billing provider field for electronic claims, and printed in the appropriate fields in the paper insurance claim.
